Environmental White Page: Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO)

In today’s rapidly evolving industrial landscape, environmental sustainability has become paramount.  Gaska Tape operates our manufacturing of adhesive foam tapes with environmental controls in place to support our commitment to environmental responsibility.  We complete quarterly reporting to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to comply with our active air permit requirements.  Since 1995, Gaska Tape has and operates a Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) for air quality improvement.

Why RTOs are Important

The deployment of RTOs presents a transformative solution for mitigating harmful emissions and promoting cleaner air quality. By effectively capturing and oxidizing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), and other noxious substances, RTO systems play a pivotal role in reducing atmospheric pollution.  Through research and development, specific raw materials help reduce potential VOCs and HAPs, then the RTO reduces the remaining pollutants.  Although we are not required to operate the RTO continuously, Gaska Tape’s commitment to the local community and the global environment, is that we will not start manufacturing operations without the RTO functioning properly.  The system is monitored daily through standardized checks and documentation by our maintenance personnel.

How RTOs Work

How does this RTO reduce the air pollutants?  Unlike conventional air pollution control methods, RTOs offer unparalleled efficiency and effectiveness in destroying pollutants. Through the utilization of high-temperature combustion, above 1450 degrees Fahrenheit, and regenerative heat exchange mechanisms, RTOs achieve destruction efficiencies (DE) upwards of 96%, ensuring that emissions are thoroughly neutralized before being released into the atmosphere.  Gaska Tape’s last test resulted in 97.9% DE with 100% capture efficiency.

Furthermore, RTOs are designed to maximize resource utilization, minimizing energy consumption and operational costs.  By harnessing the thermal energy generated during oxidation processes, RTOs can sustainably power their own operations, reducing reliance on external energy sources and fostering energy independence.
